Unique photo galleries that commemorate the moment

How The Grad Team tells your commencement story through photos
Unique photo galleries that commemorate the moment

Commencement is more than a handshake and a diploma. It's the processional, nervous anticipation in the lineup area, the last-minute cap adjustment, and the pure joy of dancing off the stage and finding family afterwards. The Grad Team's photographers are there for all of it.

We deliver every graduate 15 to 20 unique images in their personal gallery. These include the traditional formal portrait with their diploma and the classic handshake (grandma and grandpa want it!), but we also strive for unique galleries that showcase the candid moments from the lineup, cultural touchstones on campus, and more.

The result is a gallery that doesn’t just document a single moment in time, it honors the emotional arc and significance of the entire day. Here’s how we do it, and why.

Capturing the full picture

At most commencement ceremonies loved ones are in the stands far from the action. They can’t snap phone pictures next to the stage. They say goodbye to their child as a student and greet them after the ceremony as a graduate. Simply put: Families can’t follow their graduate all day. The Grad Team can.

At every ceremony, our photographers are positioned throughout the venue to document the moments that families want most but simply cannot get themselves. We work with our clients to strategically deploy our team so we can cover lineup areas, audience reactions, and the spontaneous celebrations that happen the moment a graduate steps off the stage. Because in the age of social media, families expect more than a single portrait. They want to relive the entire day.

“The Grad Team is everywhere on commencement day," Carrie Olson, Campus Events and Special Programs Manager at the University of Wisconsin says. "Beyond their technical expertise, The Grad Team is a valued collaborator, working closely with us to implement new photo opportunities for our graduates and their families.”

Telling each school's story

No two ceremonies are the same, and, as we always say: It’s more than just a handshake. That's why our team works closely with each client to understand their ceremony, their campus, and their traditions. Our photos reflect what makes their school special.

At the University of Kansas, the processional takes students from Memorial Drive down the hill on Mount Oread and through Memorial Campanile. It's a tradition that means something to every Jayhawk who has made the walk. We partner with KU’s commencement team to strategically position our photographers along Mount Oread and near Memorial Campanile’s historic bell tower to capture candid and scenic photos, so that every graduate has the moment that makes a Jayhawk grad a Jayhawk grad captured in their gallery.

“The Grad Team knows how to honor tradition,” Libby Queen, KU’s director of ceremonies and special events, says. “The walk down Mount Oread is special for Jayhawks, and they make sure to memorialize and document it for our graduates.”

It’s the little things that make our galleries shine. At the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the beloved mascot Bucky Badger roams the commencement. The Bucky photos are a graduate and family favorite. The university works hard to make the day memorable and provides graduates branded props on seats to create additional Badger-specific memories.

“The Grad Team finds meaningful ways to make commencement photos fun and unique,” Wisconsin’s Olson says. “They don’t deliver generic candids, each image is rooted in UW’s identity.”

Why it matters

The portrait with the diploma is the photo that goes on the mantle. But the candids—the emotional ones, the ones with friends and family, the ones that capture a tradition only that school understands—are the photos graduates share, celebrate, and carry with them long after the ceremony ends. A meaningful gallery strengthens a graduate's connection to their alma mater, and it gives schools a powerful touchpoint when it's time to engage alumni down the road.

Delivering a full gallery at scale doesn't happen by accident. Every Grad Team photographer who arrives on commencement day is trained to understand the importance of what they're documenting, and where they need to be to chronicle it. This isn’t a single photographer capturing a few photos, it’s a coordinated team positioned across the venue, aligned on the story we’re there to tell.

For schools looking to give their graduates more than a stage photo, a full, personalized gallery that commemorates the traditions, the emotions, and the moments families can't get on their own, The Grad Team delivers. We work with your commencement team to understand your ceremony inside and out, and we show up on graduation day ready to document every part of it.
